Session description: The COP theme “Our Land. Our Future” provides a unique platform to highlight the critical nexus between youth, land governance, and desertification—addressing both the immediate needs of current generations and the legacy left for the future. In March 2024, the Youth and Land Multi-stakeholder Platform in Africa (YLMPA) convened a post-COP meeting with youth representatives of more than 50 youth organisations from 09 countries in Yaoundé, Cameroon. During the event, the youths assessed the outcomes of the 2023 COPs through a land governance lens and developed a position paper and roadmap advocating for youth-centred land governance to take center stage in 2024 climate dialogues. This proposed panel discussion will present these outcomes, emphasizing youth-centred land governance as a cornerstone for sustainable solutions like landscape restoration, sustainable agriculture, and community conservation.

Session description: Echoes of Our Land from the Voices of the Future” offers a unique, creative approach to climate action by giving a platform to children and youth from countries affected by drought and land loss due to climate change. Already performed at UNFCCC COP29 at the Children and Youth Pavilion, this interactive event will engage young people and adults through powerful forms of expression like art, poetry, and dance, sharing their lived experiences, offering an emotional and human perspective on climate issues that data alone cannot convey. These expressions of art are being collected by ChildFund International, Barnfonden, and VSO. The session will be a mix of live performances and a show of some pre-recorded material. An additional component that will be included at COP16 will be a photovoice element that aims to enable youth climate advocates to visually document and share their experiences, challenges, and hopes related to climate change, their role in climate action, and how this all affects their mental health and wellbeing through photography. This session aims to build empathy, amplify the voices of the next generation, and inspire urgent action from decision-makers. By connecting policymakers with the raw, unfiltered expressions of youth, we aim to shift the dialogue towards more inclusive, compassionate climate policies that prioritize both the voices and futures of young people.

Session description: More than 30 years after the Earth Summit in Rio (Brazil), trust in the impact of environmental policies can only be kept alive if we finally transform promises into tangible results beyond silos. The idea of breaking silos is not a novel one—climate, biodiversity and land are all interconnected in the real world. But what is needed to bring all the relevant policy commitments to the same table, especially in an era of rising conflict? How can doing so help us hold decision-makers accountable and ensure that the commitments made under the various conventions translate into meaningful action?
This in-person, interactive workshop brings together young and seasoned experts to explore how the three Rio Conventions—Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Desertification—can work together to create real change.
